all signs or placards carried by the demonstrators are reproductions of images by the artist Olle Baertling (1911–1981). Baertling is a representative of concrete art, and is known for his abstract paintings. The idea behind this collective performance is both formal and spiritual, thus corresponding to Baertling’s modernist understanding of art. This demonstration is not about a specific political statement. Rather, mobile paintings enter into a dialog with the space they are exhibited in. And they direct the attention towards the abstract and formalist structures that have become part of our urban reality. The demonstration placards do not proclaim explicit messages. They can, however, be read as something communal: be it that they remind us of a shared history of modern utopias, or that they encourage a future where we all participate in the shaping of our urban landscapes.
